The backbone of the police department is the Patrol Division. This division is comprised of officers who come when you dial 911. The goal of the Patrol Division is to address problems within the community and assure a safe community environment through directed and routine patrol. As the largest and most visible division of the police department, the patrol division provides the first response to emergency and non emergency incidents. The patrol division uses a variety of specialized units to deliver police services to town residents, including traffic and K-9 to work in conjunction with the Detective Bureau .
The division consists of three shifts, working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year, in all conditions. Patrol officers answer your calls for service and take appropriate action. Sometimes this means an arrest, but more often than not it means referring persons with a particular problem to the agency or person that can best help them. We participate in proactive assignments in addition to patrolling local parks and playgrounds in town. Through the analysis of crime trends and partnerships with the community these officers are deployed to specific locations to maximize their effectiveness.
Traffic Safety is an important concern of many Mendon residents and businesses, and is of equal concern to the Mendon Police Department. The patrol division is is responsible for our traffic safety and enforcement initiatives. This also includes our Selective Traffic
Enforcement Program. Officers will focus on directed traffic enforcement and safety initiatives in various areas of town, reported by concerned citizens, in an effort to reduce traffic complaints and improve safety. The purpose of traffic enforcement is to reduce traffic accidents and injuries and to facilitate the safe and expeditious flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The patrol division accomplishes this goal through a combination of education and enforcement.
Another function of the Patrol Division is to investigate traffic accidents that occur within our jurisdictional boundaries. Depending on the severity, some traffic accidents may be investigated by patrol officers or CEMLEC Crash Reconstruction. CEMLEC Crash Reconstruction is a regional service that consists of officers all over central Massachusetts. This team of officers is called in to assist with serious and fatal motor vehicle crash scenes.
