K-9 Division

The Mendon Police K-9 Unit was established in September of 2015 after town officials unanimously approved the creation of the K-9 Unit following a presentation to them by Officer Pichel. Officer Pichel and his new K-9 partner Brady attended the Boston Police Department K-9 Academy where they received their certification after 600 hours of training.

The K-9 program is currently funded by grants received from the Stanton Foundation, MA Vest-A-Dog, and continued generous donations from local businesses and members of the community. K-9 Brady is a German Shepherd that was born in September 2014. Brady was purchased from Northeast K-9 Unlimited in Raynham, MA. The name Brady was given to him after the students at Clough Elementary School participated in a competition to name the new Police K-9. Officer Pichel and Brady began working together in September 2015 when they started their training at the BPD K-9 Academy. The academy provides an intense training course that builds a foundation for the Officer and his K9 to safely and effectively patrol the town. There are many incredible skills the K-9 team learns prior to becoming patrol certified, such as Tracking, Obedience, Agility, Building Searches, Area Searches, Article Searches, and Criminal Apprehension.

When not working, Brady lives with his handler.  The care and maintenance of a Police K9 goes beyond the start and end of an assigned shift.  It is a 24/7 job that requires a huge commitment on the part of the officer.  Other than basic feeding and grooming, Police K9s must train regularly to keep up their proficiency, even if it means training on the officer’s days off.

Educating the public is important to the K-9 Unit. The unit conducts public demonstrations at various events throughout the year. If you are interested in hosting a K-9 demonstration, please contact Officer Pichel.
